Driveway Pavers
Driveway pavers need to carry vehicle loads without rutting or cracking. Acker-Stone specifies 80mm (3 1/8") interlocking units set on a compacted aggregate base with edge restraints. Herringbone laid at 45° to traffic gives the strongest interlock, and individual units can be lifted and reset instead of replacing a whole slab.

What to specify for driveway pavers
Specify a minimum 80mm unit thickness for residential drives and heavy-vehicular units for commercial entries and fire lanes. Base depth follows the subgrade: typically 6" of compacted Class II aggregate for cars, 8–12" where trucks or delivery vehicles turn. Edge restraints on every open edge stop lateral creep, and joint sand must be swept and compacted in two passes.
Design direction
Rectangular units in herringbone read as the classic driveway. Large-format squares create a cleaner, modern apron, and a contrasting soldier-course border defines the drive without extra cost. Darker charcoal blends hide tire marks; tan and cream blends keep surface temperature and glare down in desert sun.

- 80mm (3 1/8") is the standard for residential driveways. Heavier commercial traffic, fire lanes and truck aprons use heavy-vehicular units on a deeper base.
- What pattern is strongest for a driveway?
- Herringbone at 45° to the direction of travel. The interlocking zig-zag transfers load between units far better than running bond or stack bond.
- Are pavers better than poured concrete for a driveway?
- Pavers flex with the subgrade instead of cracking, can be lifted and reset for utility access, and repairs are invisible because you reuse the same units. Poured concrete is cheaper up front but cracks and patches show permanently.
- Can pavers be installed over an existing concrete driveway?
- Yes, in many cases — an overlay uses thinner units on a bedding course over sound concrete with drainage and edge detailing designed for the overlay condition. The existing slab must be structurally sound and properly drained.
