Aggregate base

The compacted crushed-stone layer between subgrade and bedding course.

Base thickness follows traffic and soil: commonly 4"–6" for pedestrian areas, 6"–8" for residential driveways, and 8"–12" or engineered depths for commercial and truck traffic.
